Flower of the Week: Mimosa

We're coming up on International Women's Day, and what better flower to introduce than the mimosa? Did you think of that iconic brunch cocktail that everyone loves? Well, this flower is where that drink got its name. Bright in its yellow colour and just as bubbly as the champagne in the drink. The flowers look like little yellow puffballs; there's something whimsical about them. One flower doesn't seem like much, but with more of them, they make the brightest impact on any bouquet, room, or event. This is the flower we'd recommend to cheer someone up or to make a gloomy day feel brighter.

What is the meaning of the mimosa? They are a major flower associated with International Women's Day, so their symbolism is rooted in independence, freedom, and femininity. It's the perfect flower to celebrate ALL the women in your life with. Commend their independence, encourage their freedom, and applaud all the different versions of femininity they display.

When do we have them? The season for mimosas is quite short, which makes it extra special when we do have them. It is generally late January to early March. As if it knew it needed to last to celebrate on March 8th. When they're in-store, we never have them for long; customers can spot the bright flowers in any section of the store, and then they're gone in the blink of an eye. Just like the association of mimosas and International Women's Day originates from Italy, we source our mimosas from Italy and France through Holex.

They're beautiful on their own, where they can shine without interruption. Or they're also wonderful at enhancing a bouquet with other flowers. At the store, we love using them in bouquets to add a burst of brightness and to make everything just a bit more special. Sometimes they can be found in the larger seasonal bouquets or even in the smaller bouquets mixed with blooms like ranunculus. To make sure they stand out, we love combining them with softer colours.

Thanks for learning about why mimosas are so important and why you should absolutely include them in your arrangements for International Women's Day. The season for them won't last forever, so make sure to grab them while you can!
